Couponing for Your Heath: Save on Fruits and Veggies!

Howdy friends it’s been a long time! I’ll be honest, my blogging break was much needed. Once I pulled the plug for a few months it was like a new found freedom. I realized my kiddos are only going to be little once, and I needed to start focusing more on them, and other important things and less time on my blog. It was a VERY hard decision but I have no regrets. Family first, blogging second.

Our recent trip to Disneyland!

However, I still have lots to share with you about couponing. Over the past several months I’ve focused on changing my eating habits, and getting in shape. It’s been an eye opening experience, but it’s been awesome! It’s amazing how much your body can transform when you work hard!

So now, I’m writing a new series of posts that teach you how to save big while eating healthy. Including healthy recipes. Couponing is great, but it’s so easy to stock up on “junk” because let’s be real, that’s mostly what the coupons are for.

How to save on fruits and vegetables...MUST read! Whenever I teach coupon classes I always hear someone complain that there are never coupons for fruits and vegetables. Guess what? There actually ARE coupons available…but they are more rare, and they may take some effort on your part to get. Here are some websites to start looking for coupons:

www.Coupons.com: Almost on regular basis you can find coupons for Libby’s canned vegetables on the first of the month. Print ASAP, they go fast.

http://www.ebfarm.com/: I have posted these awesome coupons in the past..and they are great ones! The coupons offered often print as Save $0.75 on ANY Earthbound Farm Organic Product! Use the coupon at Walmart to score FREE or super cheap organic carrots!

www.Driscolls.com Get coupons for strawberries, blueberries, blackberries and raspberries when you sign up for the Driscoll’s Reward program (Including a $0.50 cent coupon for signing up!) They’ll even send you something special for your birthday.

www.chiquitabananas.com: You know, the banana people!  Chiquita also makes Fresh Express bagged salads and salad blends. Simply use their contact form and ask for coupons…you never know what you might get!

www.greengiant.com - Green Giant is now making a variety a fresh items including romaine hearts and salad blends. You can most likely find coupons for Green Giant products in the Sunday paper.

www.avacadosfrommexico.com - This site often has Buy 3 Get 1 Free printable coupons available.

www.iloveorganicgirl.com -Sign up for their emails and score an easy $1/1 coupon!

“Like” your favorite brands on Facebook…Many times high value coupons are released through Facebook pages!

And finally look for peelies at the store!  You probably won’t find a coupon attached to your bananas, but you could find a produce coupon attached to other products in the store. Look for fruit coupons on boxes of cereal and vegetable coupons on packages of meat.

Couponing With Caution: When Extreme Couponing Goes Too Far!

Extreme CouponingI wanted to take a minute to discuss something that I think all couponers need to hear at some point or another. We all have gone though it at some point...the point where couponing goes from necessity to borderline addiction.

Let me give you a little idea of what motivated me to write this post. I follow a few couponers on Instragram. It’s kinda fun to see their latest shopping trips or to get the low down on a hidden deal. However, occasionally they show their stockpiles. And they are up there with the stockpiles of couponers on Extreme Couponing (and we all know how crazy those people are!) ;)  That’s all fine and dandy..as couponers we all strive to have an awesome stockpile. The trouble arises when we have this magnificent stockpile…….and we keep shopping. And shopping. And shopping. For every one tube of toothpaste used, five more are purchased to replace it. See the problem?

The point of couponing is to build up a stockpile with enough of each item to last from one sale to another. It’s NOT to hoard enough of one item to last you though the apocalypse. For example… Let’s say there is an awesome deal on Viva Paper Towels (which you LOVE) and you want to stock up. First figure out how much your family uses. In my family we average a roll a week. That means a pack of six would last us six weeks. I would probably buy 3 packs and call it good. By the time we are getting close to running out another sale on paper towels will have rolled around and we can replenish our supply. There is no need to buy 2o packs. Really. Sure it looks awesome…but come on now. Who really needs a 2-3 year supply of paper towels on hand?!

Also, there is no need to chase every deal. If you are running to the store every day to grab every free item…take a break. You will burn yourself out…and for what reason? Think about it..odds are you are running to the store to buy items you already have multiples of. All because it’s free. I challenge you to take a week break from couponing..or even a month. Take time to LIVE off your stockpile. Isn’t that the whole point of doing what we do?

Not to mention, if you are chasing every deal and stocking up on everything you aren’t saving ANY money. I saw people literally buy 40 packs of paper towels last week and then post their “score” on Instagram. At $2 a pop..they spent $80 on something they probably already have plenty of! How is that saving money? They wasted time, gas, and energy on something they didn’t even need! All for the sake of getting a deal and feeling the “couponing high.” They spent $80 BUT they saved $160….awesome right? Nope…that’s $80 they no longer have to use on other stuff for their family. They probably could have spend $6 (3 packs) and had plenty. If they would have done that I would consider it REAL savings!

I’m totally guilty of this whole thing. There are weeks when I plan a Walgreens shopping trip and I buy stuff I don’t need because it’s cheap. Herbal Essence for $1? That’s my stock up price so I buy a couple…great! The problem is I already have five things of shampoo at home which should be plenty. The better way to have done this would be wait until I’m down to my last bottle or two and THEN go on the hunt for a sale. Plus, when I’m in Walgreens I end up buying extras…suckers for my kids, a clearance deal or two, “fillers” and before I know it my $6 shopping trip has turned into a $20 one. (Please tell me I’m not the only one this has happened to!)

I love couponing. I love the huge amounts of money I have saved over the years by doing it. I love never having to pay retail for items I use everyday. I just encourage you to coupon with caution…let couponing be part of your life…don’t let it BE your life.
